We already know what Disney has planned for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with a variety of shows to be streamed on their upcoming service, Disney+, along with the list of movies for the next 3 years. With Disney’s recent acquisition of 21st Century Fox, they now have access to some of Marvel’s most popular superheroes, like X-Men and Fantastic Four. But during the times when Marvel was not as affluent a company as it is now, it made some really bad deals in order to survive. The studio sold cinematic rights to many of its major creations to many different studios. Sometimes though, this has lead to various timeless classics and superhero movies that have stood the test of time. Here’s a list of some of these upcoming Marvel movies outside MCU which we promise will be worth your time:
1. Venom 2 (September 17, 2021)
Eddie Brock and his parasite pal, Venom is back in the sequel to the standalone Sony film, Venom. The mid-credits scene of Venom saw Woody Harrelson play Cletus Kasady, who becomes infected by the Venom symbiote in the comics, turning him into the supervillain Carnage. Now, Venom was an amazing movie. It was no masterpiece but it was really fun. There was a lot of fan service for the fans of the character. If there was one thing that the fans wanted in the movie, it was Carnage. And now, it has been confirmed that Carnage will be playing the prime villain in the sequel. I am plenty excited for it and can’t wait to see the psychopathic and ultra-violent Carnage being portrayed as a live-action character.
With Fleischer busy directing the Zombieland sequel, Sony turned to Andy Serkis, an actor and director well-versed with CGI and motion-capture technology. Naomie Harris has also been roped in to play Shriek, a love interest for Carnage and possibly the film’s secondary villain. It’s currently said to release on October 2, 2020.
2. The King’s Man (December 22, 2021)
The third film of Matthew Vaughn’s popular Kingsman series, a sort of parody on the spy genre, returns next year. But this time around, the trailer has led to me believing that they are going for a much grittier Kingsman movie than the last two times. It has been confirmed that this is a prequel, probably set during one of the major wars. The movie is set as a period piece and I really like the cinematographic style.
Taron Egerton has confirmed that he won’t be back as the popular Eggsy Unwin but stated that he may return for future installments. Colin Firth, Jeff Bridges, Channing Tatum, Halle Berry, and Pedro Pascal, however, will be back for the next installment alongside newcomers Harris Dickinson, Gemma Arterton, Aaron-Taylor Johnson, Djimon Hounsou, Ralph Fiennes, Stanley Tucci, Liam Neeson, Charles Dance, Daniel Bruhl, among other actors. Big names.
The King’s Man is tentatively set to release December 22, 2021, after being pushed from November 2019 due to the pandemic.
3. Morbius (January 28, 2022)
After playing The Joker in DC’s Suicide Squad, Jared Leto turns his attention to Marvel, where he will play a Spider-Man character, the vampire Morbius. Daniel Espinosa will helm the film. Morbius is a dangerous guy. But, he has proven himself capable of heroic deeds time and again. He is a vampire who gained his vampirism not through traditional means but through lab experiments. The danger of him succumbing to his thirst for blood also lingers and I believe that will be one of the key focuses in the movie. He has often allied himself to Spider-Man. But looking at the relationship between Marvel and Sony, it is highly unlikely that Spider-Man will show up.
But, in what’s exciting news Leto said that there was potential for Morbius to appear alongside Blade in the MCU. The cast includes Leto, Matt Smith (Dr. Who, The Crown), Tyrese Gibson (Fast and the Furious series), among other actors.
Morbius is scheduled for released January 28, 2022, in IMAX.
4. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2 (October 7, 2022)
After Into the Spider-Verse‘s widespread critical acclaim, Sony decided to make an entire universe focusing on the various Spider-Men. This movie will focus on Miles Morales as he gains more control over his newfound spider powers and his blossoming relationship with Gwen Stacy which we didn’t get to see much of in the first film. Into the Spiderverse was wildly innovative and revolutionary giving us visuals that felt like you were reading a comic book.
I am expecting a similar style meets substance treatment. The things that made the first movie great should be available in spades in the seconds one as well. That is because the experimental formula has now become tried and tested. And all audiences seem to love it. It can only go uphill from here!
From April 2022, the release is now moved to October 7, 2022.
5. All-female Into the Spider-Verse spin-off (TBD)
Gwen Stacy and Peni Parker became instant hits in Into the Spider-Verse. Due to the success of the film, Sony decided that along with a sequel, they would make various spinoffs, one of them being an all-female Spider-Verse movie, which included Stacy and Peni, along with other female Spider characters like Spider-Woman, Silk, and so on. I really like the premise. It’s quite promising and intriguing. However, there have not been any major updates for a while now. Even Steinfeld’s in the dark about the project’s current status.
6. Logan spinoff (TBD)
Logan was a critical and commercial success. One could go as far as to say that it deserved an Oscar nomination for Best Film. I mean if Black Panther deserved it, then Logan did too. The plot is said to focus on Laura, the non-biological daughter of Logan, who will most likely take up the mantle of Wolverine in future films. She is the X-23 that we have all come to know and love. Her wild and unyielding demeanor made all of us fall in love with her. 23’s character development was very well-handled in the first movie.
Hence, the sequel will be awarded an already well-rounded character that has been escalated to a great level. And we got a really good pay-off at the end of Logan. But this time, Hugh Jackman will not be there to siphon our emotions and love for his iconic portrayal of Wolverine.
While the project hasn’t been officially canceled, it’s looking very doubtful now. The big Fox/Disney deal is likely to have killed the spin-off with MCU looking to take the X-Men in a completely different direction. But director James Mangold, reportedly, said that he would be open to making an X-23 movie with Daphne Keen more than ready to reprise her part.
